Mizereck, Stanford finish 1-2, lead Leon boys' cross country team

DADE CITY — Matt Mizereck and the Leon boys cross country team successfully defended individual and 3A cross country titles, while Maclay's Patrick Swain won the 1A state championship in dramatic finish, capping a banner day for local programs at Little Everglades Park.

On his 17th birthday, Mizereck held off teammate Will Stanford as the Lions used their 1-2 finish and a banner effort by the back end of the lineup to pull away from Tampa Chamberlain.

Swain's improbable championship run came at the expense of faltering North Florida Christian senior Whitney Strickland, the race favorite. They were charging elbow-to-elbow down the long home stretch before Swain surged ahead with less than 200 meters to go as Strickland began to wobble up the demanding final incline.

Staggering the final 100 meters, Strickland collapsed as he crossed the finish line. He was treated by paramedics on the scene and transported by ambulance to East Pasco Regional Medical Center.

"They kept him in the hospital a little while, gave him an IV, checked him out and released him," said NFC coach Jason Bowman. "He's doing good.

I'm sure he's disappointed he didn't finish first, but happy he finished sixth and was able to finish."

Mizereck and Stanford provided the day's early drama, pulling free from the field at the midway point, as they dueled to the finish.

"When you're running with your friend, you push each other," said Mizereck, a junior. "It's sort of like a friendly battle until it comes to the final sprint, where it determines who's going to be first and who's going to be second. . . . I think we just help each other get times we want. Will pushed me a lot inside (the middle of the course). I pushed him in the beginning."

In the end, it was the lanky Mizereck pulling away up the finishing incline, just as he did a year earlier. His winning time of 15:16 established a short-lived state meet course record, which was broken later in the day by 4A champion Brian Atkinson of Melbourne (15:15).

After swapping leads with his teammate much of the way, Stanford, a sophomore, finished all alone in second at 15:20.

"It's awesome — two of the best in the state get to run together," said Stanford. "It's good to have a teammate that good. It makes us both better. It makes it a lot easier to work hard."

Leon's hard work paid off down the line as well. The Lions trailed Chamberlain by three points at the midway mark, but came charging back for a 30-point win over the Chiefs, thanks to the efforts of sophomore Riley Doherty (16th, 16:10) and seniors Eric Hoofnagle (28th 16:30) and David Twitchell (36th, 16:34).

"We weren't nearly this good early in the season and we needed to improve," said Leon coach Andrew Wills. "There was a point in the middle of the season where I thought we weren't going to be good enough. The last two or three weeks, some of the seniors have come on real strong."

Chiles bunched its top five finishers within 21 seconds — the tightest pack of any team in the field — and settled for a 13th-place team finish.

Maclay finished third overall and Godby finished 18th in the 2A team competition.
